Skyfire browser for Windows Mobile is game changing does Flash

Skyfire browser for Windows Mobile demoThe Skyfire browser is set to finally bring PC-like browsing to your Windows Mobile device with crazy speeds and support for all manner of embedded content. Sure, there are ways to get Youtube and other mobile video content through proxy sites that convert on the go or with other 3rd-party applications, but this puppy does it all in one sweet and free package. Facebook and Myspace pages load up in no time, video plays in the browser, and all of this is accomplished with some server side magic on the part of the Skyfire server but is completely transparent to the user.

All flavors of Windows Mobile -- 5 and 6 for both touchscreen and not -- are supported with the roadmap hinting at Symbian support in the near future.

LG Touch DVB T80

The "Digital Media" department deals with "Mobile Entertainment Devices" or in other words portable media players. LG has been rewarded many times with an EISA Award for the best product, like their first MP3 player featuring a touch screen. The LG T80 is one of its siblings. LG T80 PMP was designed by the same designer that designed the Prada cell phones. Although LG T80 looks slightly better than previous portable media players of the LG stable, the design still remains somewhat on the boring side.

The front has a shiny coating with few buttons. One side contains the on/off/pause slide bar, the top side carries a 3mm head jack connection, and the large 3 inch WQVGA (400 x 240) Touch Screen TFT color LCD takes care of the remaining operation possibilities. With its dimensions of 3.87 x 2.18 x 0.5 inches the T80 closely resembles the Apple iPhone, however; the LG T80s weight is a lot less.

What makes this LG so special is the DVB-T support that allows you to watch television, providing there is a signal close by. The LG T80 portable media player offers 4GB of storage capacity (also available with 8GB) which translates into approximately 1000 songs. Standard included with the T80 are a headset, USB data cable, manual and LG Media Centre software. LG T80 media player features DVB-T enabling you to watch television whenever a digital TV signal is available.

Watching television on the screen is a joy to the eye. It feels like watching television on a screen that is clearer than your analogue TV, or even clearer than some computer screens. Since the signal is digital, there is no annoying noise or delay in transmission the image stands, or is not there at all. This is extremely pleasant to watch, whilst once there is a picture it comes undisturbed, which lets you watch television without interruptions.

HTC Imagio Verizon Wireless

Though HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless) touts itself as a multimedia smartphone, it is not as flashy as other multimedia focused hand helds. This is not to say it isnt attractive indeed, we love the large touch screen display as well as the smooth edges and tapered corners. But the dimpled bezel surrounding the display, which doubles as the speaker, and the thick plastic casing gives it more of a hefty industrial feel. Measuring 4.6 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick and weighing 5.25 ounces, HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless) has quite a sturdy construction and is not at all flimsy or cheap.

The back of HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless) is partially covered in a matte black soft touch finish, which gives it a comfortable feel in the hand. By far the most stunning thing about HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless)s appearance is its large 3.6 inch WVGA touch screen. It has 65.000 colors output, 480x800 pixel resolution, and a smooth glass surface, which result in beautifully crisp images and sharp text. The extra screen real estate lends itself well to Web page scrolling and video viewing as well.

Also handy is the built-in accelerometer that switches the screen from portrait to landscape mode when you rotate the phone. This is only applicable in certain situations, though, like with the Web browser, e-mail, photos, and videos. Even though HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless) does not have the Touch branding. Like that on the HTC Touch Pro2, you get additional tabs for the Calendar and Stock quotes, plus the ability to add and remove tabs on the Home screen. We also really like that the Start menu is presented in a grid view, which you can customize with different apps and settings.

HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless) has a resistive touch screen rather than a capacitive one. We usually complain about this because resistive displays require more precision than capacitive screens, but in the case of HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless), we were quite pleased with it. The touch screen felt responsive and easy to use, even when we were just using our fingers instead of the included stylus. We even liked the onscreen QWERTY keyboard, especially since it supports XT9 auto word complete and tapping the keys provides haptic feedback.

We do prefer using the keyboard in landscape mode rather than in portrait mode, however, as the keys are a bit bigger, thus resulting in fewer mistakes. The zoom in and out bar underneath the display helped a lot when reading and selecting hyperlinks in the Web browser as well, since you could just zoom in easily by sliding your finger on the bar. It does take a couple of seconds for the page to render when zooming in, though. Underneath the zoom controls are the Talk and End or Power keys, a media key, the Start menu key, and a back key.

The media key can be mapped to any media application, like V Cast TV, V Cast Video, or the music player. The keys are flat, but there is enough delineation between each key that they werent hard to press. The volume rocker is on the right spine and the mini-USB port and 3.5 mm headset jack are on the bottom. On the back is the camera lens plus an antenna that doubles as a kickstand simply press the release button and itll pop out. This way you can set HTC Imagio (Verizon Wireless) on a flat surface and watch videos as if it were a portable television. Also on the back toward the lower right is the stylus compartment. The microSD card slot is inconveniently located behind the battery cover on the right side.

Apple Removing Restocking Fees on 11th January

apple iphone fee

Apple planning an expansive conclusion to its restocking fees at retail that would stimulate its Verizon iPhone,on January 11. The company would permanently waive the 10% penalty for anyone returning a device in the usual two-week grace period, starting January 11, the same day as the special event.

However the cancellation of restocking fees will be useful if you wish you’d ordered an upgraded version of an Apple product. 9to5Mac also notes the date of January 11 being the same date as the Verizon event and also this means there will be more of an Apple presence at the event than previously thought. We’ll have to see how Apple deals with people trying to return their scratched up iPods and what the policy with iPhones will be. The 14 day return period still applies but for example if you purchase a 16 GB iPad and use it for 3 days, then want to upgrade to the 32 GB model, you won’t need to pay an additional 10% restocking fee.

After all we know that some readers who’d waited patiently for a Verizon iPhone eventually lost hope and plumped for the AT&T iPhone. Whatever the reason it’s good news for Apple consumers as it covers all Apple products. Then again, Apple could merely be following Best Buys lead, with the 1.11.11 date pure coincidence. Either way, were fans of open return policies for expensive products, so if you ask us, its more of a good thing.

New Devil May Cry 4 Xbox 360 PS3 Gameplay Footage

New Devil May Cry 4 demoDevil May Cry 4 for the Xbox 360 / PS3 "present two separate difficulty levels for players to test their skills with."

For newcomers to the series, the Human setting should offer a challenge but help ease players into monster killing. For veterans of the franchise, however, the Devil Hunter setting should present more than enough of a challenge to your abilities.

iPhone 2 1 beta hints at new iPod touch

iPhone2.1 beta, nano & shuffleWho knows how much this is worth, but theres a lot of chatter flying around today about some text strings in the beta release of iPhone OS 2.1 that make reference to an "iPod2,1." Seeing as the current iPod touch is designated "iPod1,1," thats a pretty strong hint that a new model is coming.

Whats more, its going to be almost exactly the same as the current iPod touch, with maybe the addition of GPS -- its not like Apple is going to position this thing above the iPhone.

First OUYA now Google Amazon Mad Katz MOJO

When the OUYA hit kickstarter a last year the idea of an Android console was by and large thought of as a good idea. Mostly from the indie scene which backed the project in large numbers.

We backed it too, and despite a few of the teething problems, its a pretty nifty bit of kit for the $99 backer costs (£60)

Many said it wouldnt work and needed the Google Store, well thats not true because many are making games for the OUYA which are exclusive. Around 700 games are in the process of / have already hit the OUYA store - although only round a quarter of OUYA owners have ponied up for games which range from 99c to $14.99. Sideloading is easy and of course you are allowed root the unit.

So where does that leave the incoming Amazon console. Well the Kindle already has a market place that isnt Google and we assume that it will have the same DRM lock down also seen on the Kindle. Would be pretty easy for Amazon to modify their bastardised Android to fit a console with a game pad, although wouldnt they need to go back to devs and ask them to create software for them too !? Oh sideloading games is a good way but not sure Amazon will allow this as many apps that do let you do so are missing from the Amazon App Store.

Anyone who has an OUYA that has sideloaded games or installed direct from Google Play know that many games are not optimized for the hardware or the key mapping is out of wack.

Mad Katz say their console should be ready for release in Q4 and that will have the Google Play Store on board, and here is where the battle lays.

Assuming devs can get their software into the Google Play Store with unique mapping for that console we will see the winner. Remember the Sony Xperia Play ? while it didnt sell in huge numbers there are plenty of games which had the handsets key mapping already sorted. Games were optimized for the hardware and download was easy. Sony didnt care about getting revenue from the apps, they are in the hardware business and wanted to shift the handset. Mad Katz are the same, they are only interested in shifting the hardware. Where Amazon and OUYA receive revenue from apps too, meaning a duplicate purchase if its on muliplatform.

The benefit of playing games at home AND on the move without re-buying for each system is huge, we can understand why OUYA want to receive revenue from apps but Xperia Play had games what were optimized for that console right out the Google Store. So could OUYA become a hardware only business model, and open up Google Play to compete with Mad Katz ? Because if they dont they maybe in for a bumpy ride..

As for the Amazon console, they may get some traction, however just cant see XBMC or any of the other apps that allow streaming coming to the console, because Amazon want you to buy their content. Unless its going to have an open bootloader etc. Amazon will be more limited than the OUYA is, but for the masses, do they care ?! Kindle says no.

If Google release a console with Google TV built in, we may see a massive win for them, even better if it keeps the costs down, integrates Chromecast too. $199 for that !? If it includes Google TV then its certainly an attractive price.

IGN Looked at the OUYA and makes some good points, if you havent heard of OUYA then watch this review.

Hands on HP Chromebook 11 review

Hands on: HP Chromebook 11 review

For

  • Great screen
  • Micro-USB charger
  • Design
  • Price

Against

  • Average battery life
  • Keyboard
  • Chrome OS may be too limiting for some

Has the Chromebook finally found its feet?

Googles high-end Chromebook Pixel raised applause and eyebrows in equal measure when it hit the shelves back in February.
Despite being a beautiful device with a crystal clear IPS display packing an impressive 239 PPI, many questioned whether a machine running Googles internet-reliant Chrome OS could justify a hefty $1299 (£1,049 or AU$1374) price tag.

HPs Chromebook 11 was "inspired" by the Pixels design. Its a device we were immediately drawn to for its clean looks and portable leanings, which are particularly attractive plus points considering the machine has been priced at a mere £229 ($279, or AU$364).

Moreover, the company appears to have got picked the right areas to keep the cost down without compromising the Chromebook experience.
HP Chromebook 11

HP Chromebook 11 design

Simply put, this is the best Chromebook to have pitched its pearly-white tent in this price bracket.
Thats partly down to its reflective plastic body, which harks back to the days of Apples white polycarbonate MacBooks (were they really discontinued just two years ago?).

From the lid to the gaps between its chiclet-style keys, light bounces off the Chromebook 11 at every angle (with the exception of its matte black, logo-bearing bezel). It looks great, but it does mean that the machine attracts fingerprints like a magnet.
A strip featuring Googles trademark colours can be found on the back of the lid. Like Apples MacBooks, it lights up when in the open position, lending it another subtle MacBook-like touch.
HP Chromebook 11

HP Chromebook 11 display

Though we think Google has the right idea with Chrome OS, its reliance on the internet to provide functionality through its online services and Chrome Store apps leaves it entering the fight with one hand behind its back.
Its a story that Surface RT tablet owners will be all too familiar with, and it means that, as with Microsofts decision to bump up the resolution on the Surface 2, Chromebook manufacturers had to ramp up the attractiveness to put out desirable machines.

With the Chromebook 11, HP has done just that. It sports a sharp 11-inch (1366 x 768) display that provides wide viewing angles (176 degrees, to be exact) thanks to the inclusion of an IPS panel, which provides deep blacks and makes colours pop.
Chrome OSs animations - whether thats switching from full-screen to windowed mode or the taskbar fading out - are more visually appealing than ever before.
HP Chromebook 11

HP Chromebook 11 specs

Ultimately, at this price point, the Chromebook 11 was going to have to make a few sacrifices and a major one is the processor.
HP decided against an Intel processor (the powerful Core i5 is found in the Chromebook Pixel), instead choosing to opt for a dual-core Samsung Exynos 5250 processor backed up by 2GB RAM.

Chrome OS is a naturally light on its feet, so even with the downgrade we failed to detect any slowdown when opening apps and windows, and the device still wakes up immediately from sleep like a MacBook.
HP Chromebook 11
The device itself weighs 1.04kg, so its certainly a portable machine that you could sling in a bag without a second thought. But its not super light - thats the same as many Intel Ultrabooks.

It comes with 16GB of internal storage, which youll need to install an increasing number of Desktop Apps emerging from Googles Chrome Web store.
Of course, Google is also throwing in 100GB of cloud storage for two years that you can use to store and retrieve files from before splashing out for a subscription.

HP Chromebook 11 connectivity

The only ports to be found on the Chromebook 11 are on the left-hand side of its body, the most notable being a micro-USB slot used to charge the device.
Its a remarkable first for a laptop and only adds to its mobile feel. Best of all it means an end to lugging around chunky charging bricks that can cause serious follicle damage (when youre ripping your hair out, obviously) when they give up the ghost or become frayed at the ends.

HP reckons youll get about six hours use out of the Chromebook 11 before needing to plug in a charger, and if you do need one, a spare one should never be too far away.
Other ports include two USB 2.0 connectors and a headphone jack, and a front-facing VGA webcam is housed in the top of the devices lid.
HP Chromebook 11

HP Chromebook 11 keyboard and trackpad

Lets face it - a laptop at this price is never going to afford you the reassuring springiness of Apples MacBook Air ultrabooks, but the Chromebook 11 offers adequate travel and decent spacing between its full-size keys.

It certainly didnt blow us away, and it may be the case that we would have to spend longer with the machine before making our mind up proper.
Theres also the usual row of Chrome OS-specific shortcut keys along the top. The matte trackpad feels responsive enough, and it supports two-finger scrolling and three-finger tab switching in Chrome.
HP Chromebook 11
Flip the Chromebook 11 over and youll find a strip of padding along the top and the bottom that matches the coloured trim around the keyboard.
Theres a HP logo in the middle, the only evidence that the company actually made the device. Its joined by an even more inconspicuous "Made with Google" logo underneath.

Know when your bus is late with live transit updates in Google Maps

(Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog)

Often when I’m taking public transit, I arrive at my stop on time only to anxiously check my watch and look down the street for my bus, which is running late once again. Those extra minutes I’m forced to wait seem like an eternity, and the only information I can access on my phone is when the bus was supposed to arrive.

Starting now, Google Maps for mobile and desktop can tell you when your ride is actually going to arrive with new live transit updates. We partnered with transit agencies to integrate live transit data in four U.S. cities and two European cities: Boston, Portland, Ore., San Diego, San Francisco, Madrid and Turin.

When you click on a transit station or plan a transit route with Google Maps and there are delays or alerts related to your trip, you’ll now see “live departure times” (indicated with a special icon) and service alerts.

Live transit departure times after tapping on a station

Live service alerts when receiving transit directions

Live departures and alerts on desktop

We’re working with our public transit partners to help them provide live data to more people in more cities. You can get live transit updates in the latest version of Google Maps for mobile (requires Android 1.6+), as well as Google Maps on all supported desktop and mobile browsers.

“Where are you?”

Starting today, you’ll never again have to answer (or ask) that question when you’re on the go with your iPhone. With the new Google Latitude app for iPhone, you can see where your friends are and now, continuously share where you are – even in the background once you’ve closed the app.

Since launching last year, Latitude’s focus has always been on one goal: make it simple to stay in touch with friends and family by sharing where you are with each other. Simple setup. Simple sharing without fumbling for your phone. Now, you can use Latitude on your iPhone just like the more than 9 million people actively using it from Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile smartphones. Use the app to:
  • See where your friends are
  • Share your location continuously with whomever you choose
  • Contact friends by phone, text message, or email
  • Control your location and privacy

Watch the Latitude app for iPhone in action

You still get simple control over your privacy. Remember, Latitude is 100% opt-in. You must install the app and add friends (or accept requests) to start sharing your location. You can turn off background updating if you’d like and control the same privacy settings: share only city-level location, hide your location, or sign out of Latitude at any time. Learn more in the privacy tips video.

Though we released Latitude as a web application before the iPhone supported third party background applications, today’s Latitude app was built from the ground up using iOS 4’s new multitasking capability to support background updating. You’ll need iOS 4 and above on an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 to use the app.

Download Google Latitude now from the App Store in over 15 languages and 45 countries. It will be appearing in the App Store over the next day, but you can also find it directly now. Learn more in the Help Center or ask questions in the Help Forum.

Update (12/13/2010, 10:20am PST): The Google Latitude app will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod touch (3rd/4th generation). However, background location updating is only supported on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPad 3G. Were continuing to work on expanding support to more devices.

Oracles Ellison downplays threat of NSA spying on user data

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison played down concerns on Wednesday about possible government snooping in his business customers private data.

At an industry conference in San Francisco, an audience member asked the Oracle cofounder what to tell potential Oracle cloud-computing clients who worry that the National Security Agency could access their information.

"To the best of our knowledge, an Oracle database hasnt been broken into for a couple of decades by anybody," Ellison replied.

"Its so secure, there are people that complain," he added.

Oracle, Salesforce.com and other major Silicon Valley companies are increasingly offering Internet-based business services, like human resources, accounting and sales management, in a trend known as cloud computing.

Entrusting software and data management to cloud services can save companies the expense of maintaining their own servers and other IT infrastructure.

Former NSA contractor Edward Snowdens revelations about U.S. government surveillance have increased companies concerns about privacy and may cost U.S. technology vendors billions of dollars in lost sales, analysts say.

The roots of Ellisons software company go back to 1977, when the Central Intelligence Agency contracted him and two coworkers to design a database, codenamed Oracle. The same year, Ellison and his colleagues founded the database company that would eventually be renamed Oracle.

In an interview with CBS News Charlie Rose in August, Ellison said he believed the NSAs widespread surveillance was essential to preventing terrorism.

How To Browse The Internet Without WiFi 3G or Egde On Android

There are developers trying very hard pushing the boundaries and narrowing the the gap of what is possible and what is not.

One of such developers are the makers of this Android app called Be-Bound: Save Your Data Plan which allows one to connect to the internet without a 3G network, WiFi or subscription to any Internet data.

This app makes use of SMS connectivity protocol to connect you through the internet.
You would be charged the standard SMS fee and a little Be-Miles coins everytime you make a request to the internet

For network that gives unlimited SMS to their customers, it would be awesome to have such app but for those that dont the app may only be used at dire moments.

At first registration, you get a certain amount of Be-Miles for free to get you started.

One of the key features of this app is that you can check your mails, twitter, Facebook etc, however, will it be cheaper in some countries where SMS rates are high and considering  that you still have to buy Be-miles coins for like $7?

Well, there is hope for this app provided they listen to users and refine the app to be compatible with multiple devices and with other telecoms networks in different countries.

Download Be-Bound from this link if you are interested in the app.

Like our Facebook page and follow on Twitter for more smartphone news and app downloads

US lawmaker investigates potential Russia connection of Snowdens leaks

The head of the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee said on Sunday he is investigating whether former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden had help from Russia in stealing and revealing U.S. government secrets.

"I believe theres a reason he ended up in the hands - the loving arms - of an FSB agent in Moscow. I dont think thats a coincidence," U.S. Representative Mike Rogers told the NBC program "Meet the Press," referring to the Russian intelligence agency that is a successor of the Soviet-era KGB.

Snowden last year fled the United States to Hong Kong and then to Russia, where he was granted at least a year of asylum. U.S. officials want Snowden returned to the United States for prosecution. His disclosures of large numbers of stolen U.S. secret documents sparked a debate around the world about the reach of U.S. electronic surveillance.

Rogers did not provide specific evidence to back his suggestions of Russian involvement in Snowdens activities, but said: "Some of the things were finding we would call clues that certainly would indicate to me that he had some help."

Asked whether he is investigating Russian links to Snowdens activities, Rogers said, "Absolutely. And that investigation is ongoing."

Senator Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on "Meet the Press" that Snowden "may well have" had help from Russia.

"We dont know at this stage," Feinstein said.

Feinstein said Snowden gained employment at the National Security Agency "with the intent to take as much material down as he possibly could."

On the ABC program "This Week," U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, also expressed his belief that Snowden had foreign help.

"Hey, listen, I dont think ... Mr. Snowden woke up one day and had the wherewithal to do this all by himself," he said.

"I personally believe that he was cultivated by a foreign power to do what he did," McCaul said.

Asked whether he thought Russia was that "foreign power," McCaul said, "You know, to say definitively, I cant. I cant answer that."

TOTALITY OF THE INFORMATION

Rogers indicated that the nature of the material that Snowden obtained suggested foreign involvement.

"When you look at the totality of the information he took, the vast majority of it had to do with military, tactical and operational events happening around the world," he told the CBS program "Face the Nation."

Michael Morell, the former deputy CIA director, said he shared Rogers concern about what Russian intelligence services may be doing with Snowden.

"I dont have any particular evidence but one of the things I point to when I talk about this is that the disclosures that have been coming recently are very sophisticated in their content and sophisticated in their timing - almost too sophisticated for Mr. Snowden to be deciding on his own. And it seems to me he might be getting some help," Morell said on "Face the Nation."

Other U.S. security officials have told Reuters as recently as last week that the United States has no evidence at all that Snowden had any confederates who assisted him or guided him about what NSA materials to hack or how to do so.

Snowden told the New York Times in October he did not take any secret NSA documents with him to Russia when he fled there in June 2013. "Theres a zero percent chance the Russians or Chinese have received any documents," Snowden told the Times.

In remarks aired on Sunday on ABCs "This Week," President Vladimir Putin discussed Snowdens freedom of movement in Russia and that the American would be free to attend the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics.

"Mr. Snowden is subject to the treatment of provisional asylum here in Russia. He has a right to travel freely across the country. He has no special limitation. He can just buy a ticket and come here," Putin said.

Alexandras Mobile Ad itude A new series about Google mobile ads

, Product Marketing Manager, Mobile Ads

You may have heard a lot of talk about mobile advertising, but it might still be hard to make sense of this rapidly growing and constantly changing market. To help us all understand this industry, its trends, and Googles part in the market, I wanted to start this column -- and hopefully a dialogue -- about mobile ads.

First, lets define what exactly mobile advertising is. In its simplest form, mobile advertising may be an SMS or an MMS sent to your phone. On phones with data plans, mobile advertising is more likely to be text or display ads on the mobile webs search and content pages. On more sophisticated devices, you may also see broadcast TV or video advertising.

The mobile ad market, however, faces a number of challenges. While industry leaders like Japan have the technology and scale for mobile ads to thrive, other markets face a chicken-and-egg phenomenon in the development of the mobile web. Some potential mobile website owners arent sure how much they will be able to monetize a mobile website, or whether WAP will soon be replaced by HTML. And since the mobile web remains smaller than the regular web, mobile advertisers may not feel they have enough places to put their ads -- or enough viewers to see them.

The times are changing, though. The combined impact of mobile advertising promises to be huge -- and is projected to reach some $4B by the end of 2008. By 2011, this number is expected to increase to $11.3B. There are a few key reasons this market holds a lot of potential. For one, there are nearly more cell phones in the world than televisions, telephones, and personal computers combined. Secondly, smartphones that offer unlimited data plans and easy mobile web browsing are becoming increasingly popular. Smartphones already account for a majority of data traffic and are gaining in sales. Finally, mobile ads are still cheaper than their online counterparts right now.

Like I said, I want this to be a dialogue. So leave me your comments and questions below or on our YouTube channel. Ill pick some of them to talk about in future posts. In the meantime, you can learn more about mobile ads or AdSense for mobile content or read related blogposts such as Whats new with Google Mobile Ads and Meet mobile Publisher Mikle.
